The Royal Hunt of the Sun

The Royal Hunt of the Sun

Auteur : Peter Shaffer

The Royal Hunt of the Sun is a fascinating epic written by Peter Shaffer and based on historical events that took place in 16th century South America. it portrays the defeat of the majestic and peace-loving Inca empire by a small army of Spanish mercenaries, led by the cynical commander Francisco Pizarro. The Spanish “conquistadors” claim to spread the name of God, while actually striving to acquire gold. The play, however, explores many other themes pertaining namely to faith, friendship, leadership, greed and the clash of two antagonistic ways of life. In this sense, strange bonds develop between the two main characters (Pizarro and the Inca King) although they represent conflicting views on all the issues.
